Who are Batten Students?

Students in the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy come from diverse backgrounds and engage in a wide range of activities at the University.  With a rigorous application process, Batten students represent an elite group of students with a strong passion towards public policy and leadership.

Involved in their community

In addition to a rigorous curriculum, Batten students are actively involved in their school and community.  Students publish The Virginia Policy Review twice a semester, and engage in various intramural activities, as well. Many students participate in extracurricular activities in the general University community, including volunteering through Madison House, participating in Alternative Spring Break and working with programs such as Building Tomorrow: Destination Kampala, the Ronald McDonald House, the Young Women's Leadership Program, the Men's Leadership Program and Damanga Darfur.  Most recently as part of the Office of Professional Development, Batten students have signed on to work with the City of Charlottesville on housing policy, which you can read more about here.

Global Leaders

Batten students have traveled throughout the world on various service and research opportunities, including Guatemala, Ecuador, Panama and Africa.

Internship Experience

As part of the Batten curriculum, students must participate in a public policy related internship or fellowship between their fourth and fifth years.  Students not only earn prestigious internships, but also consistently rise above other interns at their level, taking on valuable assignments during their employment.

Impressive Post-Graduation Plans
