Why Invest in Batten

Throughout the private and public sectors of our society, there is a growing sense that our country faces a leadership gap. The need for ethical, effective leaders to address increasingly complex, global challenges is outpacing our cultivation of those individuals. And yet, the rigorous study and evidence-based teaching of key leadership skills has been largely ignored by American public and private universities. Frank Batten, Sr. passionately believed in creating an institution devoted to the education and promotion of strong young leaders, “…the earlier in their careers that exceptional students begin to think of themselves as future public leaders who can promote a better society, the greater the likelihood that they will become such leaders.”

“There is an urgent need to develop a new generation of entrepreneurial leaders who can bring about transformational change.”Frank Batten, Sr.

Today, the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia is the only public policy school in the nation dedicated to the academic study and evidence-based instruction of leadership. Graduates from our undergraduate, accelerated masters, and Masters of Public Policy programs go on to careers in the private, public and government sectors with a focus on improving their local and global communities. Our curriculum, which is distinguished by a robust experiential learning component, helps students emerge from their education with a better understanding of social responsibility and what it means to work collaboratively and successfully in real-world environments to achieve shared goals.

Giving to the Batten School to support our students, faculty, programs, and operations has an impact in the world well beyond the Grounds of the University of Virginia. And because the school is committed to staying small, the relative impact of your gift at the Batten School is substantial. Every gift makes a difference, and we encourage you to reach out directly to our Director of Development Lauren Kase (laurenkase@virginia.edu) to discuss the difference you would like to make at Batten with your philanthropy.
