Committing to Advocacy

We all want to change the world, but where do we start? Irma Palmer (BA '10, MPP ‘15) offers some tips and tricks.

“A lot of people think that changing the world is overwhelming, that it’s too big a problem to even chip away at,” Irma Palmer (BA '10, MPP ‘15) told an online audience last week. She urged participants to let go of that concern. “You have to believe in your vision, and you have to believe that things can get better,” she said.

Palmer serves as the speechwriter for U.S. Senator Kamala Harris but delivered her talk in a personal capacity as an alumna. She shared a range of strategies for making a difference and stressed that advocacy is an achievable and worthy goal for everyone.

“If every single person did one thing every day to advance justice,” she said, “just think about how much better, holistically, our world would be.”
