UPDATE May 8, 2024: The Batten School is excited to announce that Ellie Stombres (BA ’24) and Collin Quigley (MPP ’24) have been selected as our two student speakers for the 2024 Diploma Ceremony on May 18.

Dr. Adriana D. Kugler, a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and previous U.S. Executive Director at the World Bank Group, will deliver the keynote address at the 2024 diploma ceremony speaker for the UVA Batten School.

Kugler’s distinguished career of public service—spanning government positions, international institutions, and economic research—will inspire Batten graduates as they prepare to shape public policy through a wide range of careers. Kugler took office at the Federal Reserve in September after being nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate. Previously, she served as chief economist at the U.S. Department of Labor and was a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and of the Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality at Stanford University.

As a member of the Federal Reserve Board, Kugler plays a crucial role in shaping U.S. monetary policy and promoting financial stability. She brings a wealth of experience from her tenure at the World Bank Group, where she worked to promote sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction in developing countries. At Georgetown University, Kugler is a professor of public policy and economics and previously served as vice provost for faculty.

The Batten School community is honored to welcome her as the 2024 keynote speaker for the diploma ceremony and looks forward to learning from her unique experiences and expertise. The diploma ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 18 at James Monroe’s Highland.
