Professor Mahoney Speaks at UN on Refugee Crisis

The global refugee crisis continues to dominate news headlines, and its complexities are vast. This Friday, July 22, 2016, Professor Christine Mahoney joins an expert panel at the United Nations to discuss the global refugee crisis. Other speakers include Ruma Bose, President & co-CEO, Tent Foundation; Jay Corless, Senior Advisor, UN Foundation; and Manyang Reath Kher, Founder and CEO, Humanity Helping Sudan Project.

The forum, “Partnering for Hope: Innovative Solutions to the Global Refugee Crisis,” will also include breakout sessions with delegates from around the world. By gathering experts from multiple sectors, this UN forum aims to explain the crisis and describe some of the most innovative approaches to helping refugees fleeing violence.

Professor Mahoney, professor of public policy and politics at the Batten School, is the author of the book, “Failure and Hope: Fighting for the Rights of the Forcibly Displaced,” published by Cambridge University Press. Based on data in all 61 protracted displacement crises, fieldwork in seven conflict zones and in-depth interviews with over 170 humanitarian aid workers, government officials and refugees, the book systematically details the barriers to effective advocacy. It goes further and proposes an alternative way forward that capitalizes on social entrepreneurship, crowd-funding and micro-finance to improve the lives of those who have been forced to flee their homes to find safety.
