UVA Batten Receives Pro Patria Award from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve

UVA Batten was awarded the Pro Patria Award this week, presented annually by each Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) state or territory to employers that have demonstrated significant support to Guard and Reserve employees through their leadership and practices.

James Cathro & Dean Soloman receiving Pro Patria Award

UVA Batten welcomed a surprise guest at its staff meeting on Wednesday. Mr. Ronald Emerson, Area Chairman, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) presented Dean Ian Solomon and Director of Finance and Administration James Cathro with the Pro Patria Award. The award is presented annually by each ESGR State Committee to one small, one large, and one public sector employer in its state or territory.

Recipients of the Pro Patria Award have demonstrated significant support to Guard and Reserve employees through their leadership and practices, including adopting personnel policies that make it easier for employees to participate in the National Guard and Reserve. This is the highest award that may be bestowed by an ESGR State Committee.

Cathro, who made the nomination, wrote that he receives “overwhelming support, enthusiasm, and encouragement for my service from both Batten and UVA leadership. Batten colleagues work closely with me prior to, during, and post-recall periods to ensure smooth transitions. While on military duty, Batten leadership regularly initiates contact, including working after hours if necessary, to ensure I am supported and current on University affairs. The Batten team is highly collaborative and checks in with my family while I am on active duty to ensure they have everything they need.”
