About
Maggie is the Chief of Staff and Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives for the Dean of the Batten School. She joined Batten from the City of Richmond, Virginia, where she most recently served as Director of Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Policy, leading the City’s local, state, and federal policy, legislative, advocacy, and communications strategies. Previously, she served as Chief of Staff to former Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney. During her seven years with the City of Richmond, Maggie managed a broad portfolio of initiatives spanning public safety, environmental policy, education, and economic mobility. During this period, Richmond experienced a 33% decrease in the poverty rate and was recognized by Travel + Leisure as the best place to live in Virginia.
Before starting her career with the City of Richmond, Maggie served as a Legislative Correspondent for U.S. Senator Mark Warner in Washington, D.C. where she worked on agriculture, environment, appropriations, and budget policy.
Maggie is the co-author of “A Courageous Fool: Marie Deans and Her Struggle Against the Death Penalty,” which was published in 2017, and the recipient of the American Society for Public Administration’s 2024 National Public Service Award. Maggie is a graduate of Roanoke College (B.A. in Political Science) and the University of Virginia’s Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy (Master of Public Policy).
