Transfer Students
UVA Batten’s Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and Leadership takes place over the final two years of undergraduate study at UVA. Whether you’re transferring from a Virginia community college or another institution, there are clear pathways available and we’re here to help you find yours.
How Transfer Admission Works
The Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and Leadership is open to students who have earned at least 60 college credits. Here is how the path typically works:

01Complete Prerequisites
UVA Batten prerequisites completed at your previous institution count if accepted for UVA credit. You can also complete them during your first year at UVA or the summer after applying:
- Microeconomics (Virginia Community College equivalent: ECO 202)
- Social Psychology (Virginia Community College equivalent: PSY 216)
- Introduction to Public Policy (UVA-specific course LPPP 2200)

02Apply to UVA and Batten
Second-Year Transfers: On the Common Application, select the College of Arts and Sciences. If admitted, you will apply in your first spring to join Batten through the major application process.
Third-Year Transfers: On the Common Application, select Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy as your school of interest. If admitted, you will enter UVA as a student at the UVA Batten School.
Pathways for Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Students
UVA and Batten recognize the talent and dedication of students at Virginia’s community colleges and are committed to creating equitable pathways to bachelor’s degree attainment. VCCS students pursuing an approved transfer-oriented degree and earning a minimum GPA of 2.5 are invited to take Batten prerequisite class LPPP 2200: Introduction to Public Policy through UVA while completing their associate’s degree.
Prospective transfer students who complete an approved transfer-oriented degree—Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Arts & Sciences—are eligible for a waiver of UVA’s general education requirements upon admission into Batten.

LEAD Program — Piedmont Virginia Community College
Students at Piedmont Virginia Community College may be eligible for the UVA Batten LEAD Program, which provides an early offer of admission and guarantees transfer to Batten upon successful completion of your associate’s degree.
