Carmen Diaz is an assistant professor of public policy in the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. Her course interests include values-based leadership, conflict resolution, and design-thinking. At UVA, she is part of the UVA Health Policy Hub and the Darden Health Care Initiative, and has led negotiation and design-thinking workshops for Leadership in Academic Matters and the Health Leadership Institute.
Prior to Batten, Carmen was a postdoctoral fellow in Compassionate Care at the UVA School of Nursing, where she conducted research on the implementation of ethics and moral distress consultation services and AI-supported communication feedback technology in health systems. She previously worked as a director at a negotiation and decision-making consultancy, taught design-thinking for healthcare employees at Johns Hopkins Medicine, and was a research analyst for the Brookings Institution Center for Health Policy. Carmen is also a collaborator with Sen Sound, a social enterprise redesigning the sonic environment in hospitals.
Originally from Atlantic Beach, Florida, Carmen received her BA in Interdisciplinary Studies and MPP from the University of Virginia and PhD in Management & Organizations from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
