As a small school, we pride ourselves in the individualized attention we can give to each student. Our Batten community is dedicated to making lasting change in their communities, and with the one-on-one support from our Career Services team, our students have reported some of the highest career placement and first destination rates across the University. We asked some of our students what their career goals are and how they have utilized the Batten Career Center, and below are a few student responses about our amazing Career Services team, Hannah, Steve, and Jill!

“I am going to law school straight from Batten, and the Career Center was very helpful when I set up a meeting. I was given one-on-one attention to talk about my application timeline and how to prepare during my third year. The Career Center immediately connected me with a former Batten student who had just gone to law school, and they suggested administrators from the legal world for me to speak with.”

  • Kate, rising second-year BA student

“I hope to work in the non-profit space, particularly for an organization that strives to uplift the voices of marginalized communities. The Batten Career Center has been an outstanding resource and support system in allowing me to achieve these goals, so far, supporting me through my internship search. They helped to identify organizations of interest and steer me in the right direction!”

  • Farah, rising second-year MPP student

“I’m not sure what I want to do long term, but I know I’ll end up in DC and I want to do something policy and government related. In the short term, Batten helped me land my summer internship! I saw an internship email from Steve and reached out to a former Batten grad whose company is doing really cool things in the intersection between business and policy. Her company only advertised to Batten Career Services so I never would’ve known about the opportunity otherwise, and I could tell that her company really values the expertise and knowledge that comes with studying in the Batten School.”

  • Audrey, rising second-year BA student

“I’m seeking to combine a passion and background in research to creating meaningful change in communities. With this history in research, the career center has been useful in helping me pinpoint fields I may be interested in, such as Think Tanks. They’ve also helped me shift from a CV to a resume for certain jobs, which is difficulty considering the stark length difference.”

  • Alyssa, rising second-year Accelerated MPP student

“Outside of Batten, I am also a double major in Global Public Health, and I will be pursuing a Master in Public Health degree at UVA. I am interested in healthcare, hospital management, and health policy, so I was recruiting for internships in those specific areas. During my recruiting process, I’ve utilized the Batten Career Center numerous times, whether it was cover letter and resume review, or just simply career advice. Steve Hiss is the best!”
