Applications for the Batten School’s Master of Public Policy (MPP), Accelerated MPP, and Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and Leadership programs are now open. The school’s programs inspire students to act vigorously, effectively and ethically on behalf of the common good. Of the 250-plus schools of public policy and administration in the U.S., the Batten School has the distinction of being the only one explicitly committed to teaching leadership—how it works, why context matters in decision-making and which actions lead to tangible results.

Batten’s MPP program is a two-year, full-time graduate program. Students must complete 49 credits, as well as a summer internship between the first and second year of the program. The Batten School also offers several dual degree programs with other professional schools at UVA that allow students to complete the two programs in less time. MPP program applicants must hold, or expect to hold before enrollment, a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association. Applicants with a transcript from an institution outside the U.S. must submit their transcript through a certified verification service. The round one MPP program application deadline is January 15, 2019, and the round two deadline is March 25, 2019.

The Accelerated MPP program allows current UVA undergraduate students to earn a Bachelor’s degree and a Master of Public Policy degree in a total of five years of coursework. The program is available to students from all undergraduate majors at UVA. Students must complete 49 credits, as well as a summer internship between the first and second year of the program. Students typically apply for admission in their third undergraduate year and must demonstrate they will have earned at least 90 undergraduate credits before the start of their fourth year. Applicants are required to have passed ECON 2010 and one of the following math courses: MATH 1190, Math 1210, MATH 1310, APMA 1090, or any more advanced calculus course. The application deadline for the Accelerated MPP program is January 18, 2019.

Batten’s Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and Leadership is a multidisciplinary, liberal arts program focused on understanding how public policy decisions are made, and how civic leaders in government, non-profit organizations, and the private sector contribute to collective problem solving. Students typically apply for admission in their second undergraduate year. Applicants must demonstrate that they will have earned 60 credits prior to matriculation, including two prerequisites (ECON 2010 or equivalent, and either LPPL 3100 or PSYC 2600 or equivalent). The major consists of 41 credits including a capstone seminar completed the final semester of the student’s fourth year. The application deadline for the Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and Leadership program is February 4, 2019.

Graduates of the Batten School are in high demand and recruited aggressively by government agencies, public interest groups and NGOs and private-sector employers. Students emerge from the Batten School understanding social responsibility, ethical leadership and how to work collaboratively in real-world environments to achieve shared goals. With a focus on improving their local and global communities, Batten graduates are ever-mindful of the school’s founding purpose: to educate ethical and enlightened leaders who are prepared for public life in their communities, professions, and the world at large.
