Katie Straight joined Batten following 15 years of diverse, cross-sector non-profit, international NGO, and consulting experience. Her previous work in global development and poverty reduction was largely focused on stakeholder management and communications, capacity development, strategic program design, and impact evaluation. She is passionate about supporting adult learning, strategic and sustainable organizational growth, and organization-wide leadership development. A UVA alum, Katie received a B.A. in History from the University of Virginia and an M.Ed. in International Education Policy from Harvard. In concert with her role as Assistant Director of Graduate Academic Programs, Katie serves as an adjunct lecturer of global development policy at Batten.

Shannon Valentine is the Secretary of Transportation at the Commonwealth of Virginia, a position she has held since 2018. Prior to this role, she was the founding member and co-chair of OneVirginia2021: Virginians for Fair Redistricting and is a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates.

Dr. Philip N. Jefferson is the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of Faculty, and the Paul B. Freeland Professor of Economics at Davidson College. He was the previous president of the National Economic Association and has taught at Swarthmore College, Columbia University, and the University of Virginia.

Clay Lowery is Executive Vice President at the Institute of International Finance (IIF), where he oversees the divisions that focuses on sustainable finance, digital finance, financial regulation, sovereign debt analysis, and macroeconomics. Prior to this position, he had been the Managing Director and co-founder of Rock Creek Global Advisors and served as an Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of Treasury.

Erinn Lauterbach

I am currently a Post Doctoral Research Associate at the Center for Effective Lawmaking in the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. I received my PhD in American Politics from the University of California, Riverside, in June 2020.

Jieun Pai

Jieun Pai researches social hierarchy and conflict resolution. Specifically, her research seeks to provide insight into how people can satisfy their need for status in teams and organizations harmoniously. Pai received her Ph.D. in Management and Organization from Anderson School of Management at UCLA and holds M.A. in Human Resources from University of Minnesota and B.S. in Chemical Engineering from KAIST, South Korea.

Michele Claiborn

As Director of Equitable Analysis for The Equity Center at UVA, Michele Claibourn leads the Center’s community-engaged data science work in support of a more equitable and just region. She has directed or supervised multiple community-based research projects in the Charlottesville community, including racial equity studies for the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and the Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for the Homeless.
