New Research: Non-Opioid Drug Death Rates Are Also on the Rise

The number of Americans dying from drug overdoses has risen rapidly in the last decade, with opioids viewed as the primary culprit. However, recent research suggests that opioids are not the only drug involved. According to Batten professor of economics, Christopher J. Ruhm, half of the overdose deaths have involved polydrug use and deaths involving nonopioid drugs are rising almost as fast as those involving opioids.

Professor Gelsdorf was selected to support the United States Agency for International Development Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA), the UK Department for International Development (DFID), and Grand Challenges Canada in advising them on projects to be a part of their multi-million Fund for Creating Hope in Conflict: A Humanitarian Grand Challenge. This Fund seeks to accelerate solutions that enable life-saving or life-improving assistance to reach the most vulnerable in conflict.
